We would like to share some good news that looks past the current political and security challenges to the future of Haiti’s agricultural economy. The partnership between Timberland and the Smallholder Farmers Alliance (SFA) to reintroduce cotton is described in one chapter of a new book, Putting Purpose Into Practice: The Economics of Mutuality published by Oxford University Press. Click here (or on the image above) to read the Timberland/SFA chapter or here to download the whole book… both options are free.
The Timberland/SFA partnership serves as a case study to illustrate the book’s core message of how companies can balance addressing global challenges, like climate change, and at the same time deliver enhanced business performance.
Putting Purpose Into Practice is based on a groundbreaking research project undertaken jointly between the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford and Mars Catalyst, the think tank of Mars Inc. It provides a highly accessible account of how companies should determine and implement their corporate purposes.
Chapter 23 offers a snapshot of our partnership with Timberland as of mid-2019. Since then we have begun exporting organic cotton grown by SFA farmers, and the first three shoes made with our cotton will be part of the new Timberland line within the next month.
Details on how to order these shoes will be shared in the coming weeks.
